Retrieval

Retrieval is selecting a few relevant slices from the organization’s sources before asking the model. RAG without retrieval is only a name.

Retrieval can be semantic, keyword, or hybrid. For SKU codes and invoice numbers, exact match usually matters more than semantic closeness.

Retrieval quality is the ceiling of answer quality. A strong model on the wrong slice states the wrong thing fluently.
